Overview

The Guttmacher Institute has played a leading role in the movement for sexual and reproductive health and rights since its inception in 1968. The Institute’s nearly four decades of experience demonstrates that scientific evidence—when reliably collected and analyzed, compellingly presented and systematically disseminated—can make a difference in policies, programs and medical practice.

Mission

The Guttmacher Institute advances sexual and reproductive health through an interrelated program of social science research, policy analysis and public education, designed to generate new ideas, encourage enlightened public debate, promote sound policy and program development, and, ultimately, inform individual decision-making.

Program

The Guttmacher Institute’s overarching programmatic goal is to improve sexual and reproductive health and broaden reproductive rights worldwide. Guttmacher works toward this ambitious goal by focusing on three overarching objectives to: generate new ideas and build the evidence base needed to initiate, inform and influence public policy and program development across the spectrum of reproductive health challenges; command attention by heightening the visibility of key new evidence and analyses, aggressively marketing critical issues and ideas to the media, framing issues so as to emphasize their connection to mainstream values, and responding rapidly to junk science; and empower advocates at the state, national and international level to use new evidence and analyses to galvanize public support and ensure that misinformation and misguided policies do not go unchecked.

Impact

With a new Presidential election less than two years away, it is time to take the reins by crafting a proactive, progressive, evidence-based agenda for advancing sexual and reproductive health. Ultimately, your support of the Guttmacher Institute will help create a world where sexual and reproductive choices will be informed and freely made and where parents are able to raise healthy, wanted children.
