Overview

The Sexual Assault Recovery and Prevention (SARP) Center contributes to community safety by reducing the devastation of sexual violence for all people of San Luis Obispo County through providing comprehensive sexual assault recovery services and community prevention programs. The Center was established in 1976 as the Rape Crisis Center. The name was changed in 2000 to better reflect the services we provide. In 2006, the SARP Center was recognized for 30 years of service to San Luis Obispo County. The SARP Center is the only rape crisis center providing comprehensive sexual assault services in the county. We provide crisis intervention and treatment services to survivors of sexual assault and abuse. We also work to increase awareness about sexual assault and promote prevention in the community. Our specially trained staff and volunteers offer immediate 24-hour services to the community. All our services are provided at no cost. Please check out our website at www.sarpcenter.org if you or anyone you know is a victim of sexual assault.

Mission

Our mission is to transform the lives of sexual assault survivors, their families and the community.

History

The SARP Center works to reduce the devastation of sexual violence in our community through the provision of comprehensive and accessible crisis and support services, and works to increase community awareness through education and prevention programs. The Center serves all of San Luis Obispo County, comprised of both rural and suburban populations. Prevention programs are provided to students in public schools across the county, as well as to students at continuation and community schools, Grizzly Youth Academy, Juvenile Hall and the California Youth Authority, reaching youth that are historically underserved by violence prevention agencies.

Impact

Our services to sexual assault victims have increased over 50% in the last five years. This means that in 2007, the SARP Center provided crisis intervention services to 436 survivors and their significant others; prevention and education presentations to 3,049 students and community members; self defense classes to 1,517 women and girls; 845 hours of individual, group & peer counseling; and accompaniments to 125 survivors to medical exams, law enforcement interviews and court proceedings. Over the past 2 years, the Center has been working with the Grizzly Academy, providing counseling to the young cadets who have been sexually assaulted. We started off by providing individual counseling to a few that were in most needs. This was obviously not enough, so our therapist began support groups especially for these teen girls. Currently, we see 1 group with 12 girls each in the fall. And we can always do more with your support We provide a safe place and a caring atmosphere in which sexual assault survivors can begin to heal.

We want to thank you for your contribution and for joining in the effort to end violence in our community. Our work is not possible without your support.
