CFFC' s programs support the moral and legal right to choose abortion; the religious and ethical dimensions of preventing unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease and seek to improve maternal and child health; increase access to all reproductive health services, especially in public and religiously controlled health care settings; develop sound public policies that balance individual rights and responsibilities with social and cultural values and ensure an appropriate separation between church and state.
Mission
CFFC advances sexual and reproductive ethics based on justice, a commitment to women's well being and respect for the moral capacity of women and men. Through discourse, education and advocacy, CFFC works globally to infuse these values into public policy, community life and Catholic social thinking and teaching.
Program
At the core of our efforts is an education and communications program that carries out the research, development, production and distribution of publications on reproductive health, ethics, theology and other topics and offers values-based training in communications and advocacy. In the US, we work to ensure a cultural approach to abortion rights that includes a moral defense of the right to choose and a broader justice-based agenda for reproductive health. We challenge restrictions on reproductive health services based on religion at the state and national level. We counter attacks on prochoice Catholic policymakers by both conservative bishops and groups and assist policymakers in responding to these attacks. We assist our affiliates and other organizations in Latin America working to improve the climate for reproductive health and rights. Our work in Europe focuses on the European Parliament, Eastern and Central European countries and efforts to expand access to abortion in Spain, Portugal and Ireland. We train members of the European Parliament and advocates and provide opposition research to our colleagues. CFFC will expand its services, particularly our communications training, to field workers in Africa, Asia and the Arab world over the next two years.
Impact
CFFC’s impact is particularly felt in public policy and education. Our Condoms4Life advertising campaign brought the message of responsible sexuality to DC, San Francisco and New York. Our study Complying with the Law? documented that emergency contraception (EC) is often not available to sexual assault patients treated at Catholic hospitals. The position of the Catholic church against making EC available, even to rape victims, affects not just Catholics but everyone who must use Catholic facilities. Frances Kissling’s article “Is There Life After Roe?" continues to generate more discussion on the issue of abortion than any other recent prochoice message.
